Tevis Blom C.V.

Tevis graduated from CU Boulder in 2010 with a BA in environmental studies (summa cum laude), with a focus on climate science and geography. Being a rock climber and a fly fisherman, he has always been intrigued with the power of water and been fascinated with the timelessness of rocks. The juxtaposition of the two in streams seems to defy scientific explanation, but that is his job. He studies how a weathered rock surface will affect bedrock channel geometry through the use of laboratory erosion mills on rocks ranging from super hard basalt to very soft sandstone.

Research

Tevis is a Master's student studying the effects of weathering on bedrock incision, and how this weathering affects channel geometry and eventually landscape evolution. Bedrock channel samples have been collected in two streams outside of Moab, Utah and in 3 streams in Maui, Hawaii. Samples are divided into channel center or 'thalweg', and channel shoulder or 'upper' samples. Incision rates are then compared for matching upper and thalweg samples for each stream. Laboratory processing is ongoing at this time. Tevis started work on this project as an undergraduate research assistant during the 2009-2010 academic year.
